Memórias do Subsolo 👤

This was a very exciting project for two reasons; one being the chance to make a cover for a classic book by an important author, and two being that it was TodaVia publisher's edition, which is a publisher known for its beautifully designed covers.
"Notes from Underground" consists of excerpts from the memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (referred to  as the Underground Man), who is a retired civil servant living in St.Petersburg. It is regarded as a very gloomy story.
TodaVia only requested that the cover appealed to people who had already read the book and that it was a bit more sunny than previous editions

Upon researching about the book, I found that the main character looked out into the world from his underground by a crack at the street level. I translated this scene with a black wall with a ragged crevice in which we can see two bitter eyes spying on us. I opted for this very heavy woodcut illustration that I feel transmits the resentment of the main character. The blue shines bright with the black and alludes to the cold, snowy setting of the book.

Tudo o que você precisa saber sobre psicanálise 🛋

"Everything you need to know about psychoanalysis" is just that- a concise guide to understanding the principles from Freud to Lacan. The author's wish was that we layouted the cover in a way that the phrase "you need to know" ("o que você precisa saber") was secondary, so that the reader saw first "Everything you need to know about psychoanalysis". Also, it was desired that a shrink's couch was featured.

To solve the title's condition, I used two typefaces of the same family, one being a sans-serif and the other a serif font. This way, they had a more seemless transition between eachother but still maintained some contrast. The illustration was inspired by my own psychoanalyst's office.

A arte de se agradar 💌

"Please yourself" is a book that teaches you to stop people pleasing and transform your life.

I illustrated this cover with a drawing of a character in fetal position, providing self-affirmation, that also doubles as a heart. The type chosen for the cover was also very mellow and easy on the eyes, to match with the theme of the book.

O mistério de Agatha Christie 🕵️‍♀️

This book tells the story of when famous writer Agatha Christie mysteriously disappeared for eleven days. The publisher only requested a picture of a young lady in the cover that somewhat resembled the author in her youth, since actual pictures of her in that timeframe are hard to find.

For this cover, I opted for a vintage-1920s-type font and an old picture of a young lady glaring hopefully to the beyond. To make it less romantic, I added this neon brushstroke, as to corrupt the image. It gives the book a more sinister feel, which is more on theme.
